Dear customer,
Ever wonder why does my painter need to have Workman’s Comp Insurance? Let me share an example with you.
In 2004 we hired gutter contractor to service some of our customers. He was uninsured so we covered him at great expense with our insurance agency. He did about three jobs for us. On the last job he stumbled on a porch and supposedly hurt his thumb. We immediately turned it in to our insurance company and that got us off the hook as well as the customer where the accident happened. This person went to the emergency room. From there he claimed he could not work and proceeded to collect paychecks until it ran out. He then sued the insurance company and got an extension. Currently, he is suing again to try to obtain permanent paychecks from the workman’s comp provider. He was offered a $200,000.00 settlement at which he turned it down and is suing for much more. The scary part is he may get it. The court date is in October. Remember, this is over a hurt thumb.
The reason we are telling you this is so that you will know how important it is that your contractor has up to date workman’s comp insurance before you let them work on your property. Liability insurance is not sufficient, its important but workman’s comp covers you and us. This can save you thousands in the long run.
We maintain active insurance at all times, it’s quite expensive but necessary. We have to factor that in to our overhead. If they don’t have It, don’t use them. It’s for your protection.
Sincerely,
Norm Potter
